Health classes explained

An overview of the four main rate tiers—Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard—what they represent, and which factors shift you from one to the next.

Insurers organize term pricing into rate classes. Terminology shifts between carriers, but the hierarchy stays steady: Preferred Plus (or Super Preferred / Preferred Best at some firms), Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard, then table ratings for above-average hazard. Tobacco users sit on a parallel tier with higher pricing.

What underwriters look at

Physical factors like build and vital signs, lipid panel results, any family heart or cancer events before age 60, your driving history, medications on file, your line of work and pastimes, plus any tobacco or nicotine consumption. The top tier demands strong marks on almost everything; Preferred relaxes that a bit; Standard Plus and Standard permit managed conditions like treated high blood pressure.

How to use the quote tool

The health prompt requests candid self-assessment: Excellent corresponds to Preferred Plus, Very good to Preferred, Good to Standard Plus, Average to Standard. Quotes use that assumption; the carrier finalizes the class after review. Unsure which bucket fits? Quote at two tiers and compare, allowing the application to sort it out. Overstating your health does not shrink the final bill—it just skews your estimate.

Susman Insurance Agency helps match you with carriers known for approving specific medical situations—often more valuable than chasing the lowest advertised rate.
